- Eucalyptol is markedly less toxic and less volatile than chloroform, the traditional alternative, while still dissolving gutta percha effectively; pleasant odour improves patient acceptance during a long retreatment appointment; slower action than chloroform gives the operator more control and less risk of driving softened material apically; reduces the mechanical work required of retreatment files and therefore the risk of file separation; economical 15 ml bottle.
Directions to use
Remove the coronal gutta percha mechanically with Gates Glidden drills or a retreatment file first. Place a few drops into the pulp chamber with a syringe or pledget and allow one to two minutes for the solvent to soften the material — do not flood the chamber. Work a retreatment or Hedström file into the softened mass and withdraw it with the engaged material. Repeat in small increments. Use rubber dam isolation throughout and high-volume suction, and avoid extrusion beyond the apex. Irrigate thoroughly with sodium hypochlorite and EDTA once the canal is clear, since solvent residue impairs sealer adaptation. Keep tightly closed; flammable.
