Features and benefits
- Substantivity is its key advantage — chlorhexidine binds to dentine and continues to exert antibacterial activity for weeks after the appointment, which no other common irrigant does; effective against Enterococcus faecalis, the organism most associated with failed root canal treatment; does not weaken dentine as high-concentration hypochlorite can; non-irritant to periapical tissue relative to hypochlorite, making it useful where extrusion risk is high, such as an open apex or a suspected perforation; economical 500 ml clinic bottle. Limitation: it does not dissolve organic pulp tissue, so it cannot replace sodium hypochlorite for the main irrigation phase.
Directions to use
Use with a side-vented irrigation needle placed passively 2–3 mm short of working length, never binding in the canal, with slow gentle pressure and continuous high-volume suction in the chamber. CRITICAL: never mix or directly follow sodium hypochlorite with chlorhexidine — the two react to form a parachloroaniline precipitate that stains dentine and occludes the tubules. Always flush thoroughly with saline or sterile water and dry between the two irrigants. Use rubber dam isolation. Keep the bottle closed and away from light.
