Features and benefits

  • Provides rapid relief from the severe, radiating pain of dry socket, which is one of the few genuine dental emergencies a general practice sees regularly and which does not respond adequately to systemic analgesia alone; antiseptic and obtundent constituents dress the exposed bone and control the malodour that accompanies the condition; fibrous paste consistency packs readily into the socket and stays in place under saliva flow; non-resorbable, so it must be removed or replaced at review — this gives the clinician control over the dressing period; the 15 g jar covers a large number of cases.

Directions to use

Irrigate the socket gently but thoroughly with warm saline or chlorhexidine to remove food debris and necrotic material — do not curette the socket, as this exposes further bone and worsens the pain. Dry the socket lightly with gauze. Pack a small amount of paste loosely into the socket to approximately two thirds of its depth using tweezers or a flat plastic instrument; do not overfill or condense firmly, as an overpacked socket delays healing and can act as a foreign body. Review the patient in two to three days, remove the old dressing, irrigate and replace if symptoms persist. This dressing is non-resorbable and must be removed once the pain has settled and granulation tissue is forming. Not for use in a fresh socket as a routine preventive measure.
